Why does Inboice ask for an “App Password” instead of my Gmail password?
Inboice talks to Gmail over IMAP and SMTP — the same standard mail protocols Apple Mail uses. For an account with 2-Step Verification on, Google's supported credential for these protocols is an App Password: a 16-character, app-specific token you generate yourself.
It is not your Google password, it only grants mail access, and you can revoke it at any moment without changing anything else about your account. Inboice stores it only in your device's Keychain and sends it only to Google.
How do I create one?
- Turn on 2-Step Verification in your Google Account (required before app passwords appear).
- Go to myaccount.google.com/apppasswords.
- Give it a name — “Inboice” — and create it.
- Copy the 16 characters and paste them into Inboice.
The app has this same walkthrough built in, on the connect screen.
How do I revoke access?
Delete the app password at myaccount.google.com/apppasswords. That cuts Inboice off immediately. Signing out inside the app also deletes the stored credential from your device.
Does Inboice change anything in my mailbox?
No. Fetching opens the mailbox read-only and retrieves messages without even marking them as read. Nothing is deleted, moved, labelled or modified. The one time Inboice writes anything is when you send an invoice, which sends a normal email from your own account.
Where are my invoices and settings kept?
On your device. Your business profile, clients, numbering series and record of issued invoices live in the iOS Keychain; fetched files live in the app's private storage. None of it is uploaded — there is no server. See the privacy policy.
I changed phones and my invoice numbering restarted
The numbering counter lives on the device. If you move to a new phone without restoring a backup, it will not carry over. Inboice will not reissue a number it can see in your on-device record of sent invoices, but if that record is gone too, check your last issued number and set the series to continue from there.
Which mail providers are supported?
Gmail accounts, using an app password.
